Top-Load Washer Agitator Dogs Repair Kit
Restore the full scrubbing power of your washing machine with this Factory Certified Agitator Dogs Kit. Also known as directional cogs, these small plastic teeth control the one-way ratcheting motion of the upper section of your two-piece agitator. If the bottom half of your agitator spins back and forth but the top half spins freely in both directions, makes a clicking sound, or refuses to move at all, these plastic teeth have worn smooth and lost their grip.
As a Factory Certified Part, this kit contains four heavy-duty, engineered composite teeth designed to take the brunt of high-torque washing cycles. Replacing these tiny, inexpensive parts is the single most common solution for washers that aren’t circulating clothes properly, leaving upper garments dry or unwashed.
Quick Info:
-
Compatibility: Precision fit for major brand top-load washing machines utilizing a two-piece dual-action agitator (most notably Whirlpool-built models).
-
Fixes Common Issues: Resolves poor clothes circulation, wet or unwashed clothes at the top of the tub, clicking noises during agitation, and a spinning upper agitator.
-
Kit Contents: Includes (1) package of (4) directional agitator dogs.
-
Difficulty: Novice. A highly accessible DIY repair requiring only basic hand tools.
Tools Needed:
-
Flat-blade screwdriver (to pry off the agitator cap or dust cover)
-
Socket wrench with a long extension (typically a 7/16″ socket to reach the central retainer bolt inside the agitator barrel)
Pro Tip: This is a perfect “blind” repair. When you pull the upper agitator assembly off the machine, turn it upside down over a towel—the old, broken plastic pieces will drop out. Slide the new dogs into the retainer basket, keeping them oriented in their small grooves. To keep your freshly repaired machine smelling clean and free of mildew or soap-scum buildup, consider tossing in an affresh® Washing Machine Cleaner Tablet (Item # W10135699) on a hot water cycle right after you finish reassembly.
Safety First: Before starting, unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet or shut off the dedicated house circuit breaker. Additionally, turn off both the hot and cold water supply valves to ensure a completely safe working environment.
